    Metal tile-related information

  • How many sheets do I need for my project?

  • You can find a calculator under all our tile product pages. Since most tiles vary in dimensions, you would need to go to the specific product you would be interested in for your project, and scroll down to the calculator area.

We suggest you also read our Stainless Steel Backsplash page. The "Measuring Your Backsplash" section of that page explains in details how to come up with the quantity you would need for your project.

  • What tools/materials do I need to install a metal tile backsplash?

  • Please see our Installation Page.

  • What grout color would you recommend?

  • It is difficult to recommend a specific type of grout color as personal preferences vary so much.

In general, we recommend selecting colors that would complement the grey tones of the stainless steel and aluminum tiles.

  • What should I do in case the ceramic backing gets detached from the stainless steel cap?

  • Get a quick setting epoxy to glue the detached ceramic backing to the tile.

  • Why are copper tiles more expensive than the other metal tiles?

  • Copper is naturally a very expensive metal. The copper tile is however made affordable by using a thin layer of copper to sit on top of a ceramic backing. The result is a lightweight and affordable real copper tile.

  • Are the stainless steel and aluminum tiles waterproof/rustproof? Can I use them for an outdoor project?

  • While they are technically water-resistant (not waterproof) and rust-resistant (not rustproof), we do not recommend using the tiles for outdoor projects that would leave them unprotected from the elements. The tiles can be used for covered outdoor projects, and depending on your location, an outdoor semi-covered kitchen could also be acceptable. PLEASE NOTE: You may use a solvent-based sealer to protect the tile from corroding over time, however we cannot recommend any brand and thus cannot guarantee the results would be to your satisfaction.

We do recommend using any of the metal tiles as kitchen backsplash and/or in bathrooms (see shower wall restrictions).

  • Can the tiles be used around pools and on shower walls?

  • We do not recommend the tiles be used around pools or on shower walls. They could potentially be used as accents on section of the shower walls that are usually not wet (i.e. above the shower head). PLEASE NOTE: You may use a solvent-based sealer to protect the tile from corroding over time, however we cannot recommend any brand and thus cannot guarantee the results would be to your satisfaction.

  • Will the copper tiles oxidize?

  • The copper tiles will patina/oxidize if left exposed to the elements. The patina actually protects the copper tile from further corrosion, making it in essence waterproof. If you like the patina color on copper tiles, then copper tiles can be used on unprotected outdoor kitchens. If, however, you do not appreciate the color, we recommend the use of natural carnauba wax which will prevent the copper tile from changing color. Carnauba wax can be found in car detailing stores. PLEASE NOTE: You may also use a solvent-based sealer to protect the tile from oxidizing over time, however we cannot recommend any brand and thus cannot guarantee the results would be to your satisfaction.

  • Are the tiles frost proof?

  • While they are technically frost resistant (not frost proof), we do not recommend using any of the metal tiles for your outdoor non-covered projects.

  • Are the metal tiles fireproof?

  • They are not fireproof, however they can be installed around fireplaces.

Just make sure the tiles that do have glass pieces are not installed too close to the fire.

  • Can all the tiles you sell be used around a fireplace?

  • Yes they can. Just make sure the tiles that do have glass pieces are not installed too close to the fire.

  • Can the tiles be installed on floors?

  • The EMT_AL07-SIL-CB and EMT_ALWF11-SIL-CB aluminum tiles can be installed on floors in dry areas.

Because they can be slippery and could break under heavy weight, we do not recommend the stainless steel and copper tiles to be used on floors.

However, please note that all our tiles can be used as a floor accent or liner application.

  • Where else could the tiles be used for?

  • The metal tiles could be used in any indoor or covered outdoor space, and depending on your location, even in semi-covered outdoor areas. They could beautify a hallway, a bedroom, a gym, an office, a covered patio, etc. They can be used as a wall or floor accent or liner application throughout a house or an office / commercial building. Their application is only limited by our imagination.

  • Do you sell any tile that does not require grout?

  • Yes we do. Please see below the tiles that do not require grout:

    >EMT_AL09-MIX-CB

    >EMT_AL09-SIL-CB

    >EMT_AL10-SIL-CB

    >EMT_AL12-MIX-CB

    >EMT_ALC3D-MIX-CB

    >EMT_W1301-MIX-SM

  • Do you need to seal the tiles or the grout?

  • All metal tiles offered on this site do not need to be sealed. However, some people choose to seal the grout, as it is porous and can stain if not sealed.

PLEASE NOTE: You may use a solvent-based sealer to protect the tile from corroding over time when installed on outdoor non-covered wall projects or on shower walls, however we cannot recommend any brand and thus cannot guarantee the results would be to your satisfaction.

  • What type of border edge tile do you offer? (edging strip, bullnose edge, pencil edge, etc.)

  • We now offer two types of border edge tile.

The pencil edge tile (also called chair rail, bullnose edge) is rounded and 19mm thick; it gives a more pronounced edging effect relative to the mosaic tile.

Please click here for more information on it.

The flat border edge liner on the other hand provides a more subtle edge as it is only 10mm thick with a rectangular face similar to most of our tiles.

Please click here for more information on it. We suggest you compare its dimensions to the tile you are planning to install before ordering it.

You could also buy a schluter strip (also called edging strips, tile transition strips, L channels) at one of the big box hardware stores if neither of these two border liners work out for your project.

For more information on border edge tiles, check out the bottom of our Installation Page .

  • Do you sell any tile that could be used on rounded walls?

  • Yes, all the tiles can technically be used on rounded walls, but they might need to be installed vertically instead of horizontally.

We recommend you order a sample to make sure the design would fit your rounded wall(s) appropriately.

  • What's the size of a sample swatch?

  • The sample swatches are generally 1/6 to 1/4 of a full sheet, depending on how complex or unique the design of a particular model is. A couple of the models have sample swatches that are 1/9 to 1/8 of a full sheet.

You can select the samples you are interested in by clicking on "Request Sample" on each product page.

    Tile Installation Tips

  • Tile Installation Tips

  • Make sure only non-sanded or epoxy grout is used to install the tiles.

Remove the non-sanded or epoxy grout from the tiles while the grout is still wet with a soft sponge.

This is particularly important for EMT_262-MIX-SM tile. The grout must be removed from all the structured parts (pewter accents) with a soft sponge BEFORE the grout dries out.

Avoid any and all abrasive products that might remove the finish from the tiles. See Tile Maintenance Tips for more information.

    Tile Maintenance Tips

  • Maintenance Tips for Stainless Steel and Aluminum Tiles

  • Do not use any harsh or abrasive cleaning products or any abrasive sponges.

The stainless steel tile is protected from corrosion by a thin layer of chromium oxide. It is therefore very important to never use any abrasive products, during or after the tile installation, that could damage this protective layer.

Stainless steel and aluminum tiles are low maintenance items. We recommend using only soap and (warm) water or a mild detergent with a soft sponge to clean the tiles, with a dry wipe at the end.

Alternatively a good quality non-abrasive stainless steel cleaner would be acceptable for the stainless steel tiles.

Should you have any issues removing production marks, we also recommend the use of acetone or an adhesive thinner/solvent to wipe the marks away. Please test it first on one tile to see if you achieve the desired result.

Please note all non-abrasive stainless steel cleaners and mild detergents must be completely removed from the tile, and should not be left on the tile to dry.

Please also keep in mind that 3D raised aluminum tiles are harder to clean since there are several different types of height/thickness.

  • Maintenance Tips for Copper Tiles

  • Copper tiles are low maintenance items. We recommend using only soap and (warm) water to clean the tiles with a soft sponge.

Do not use any harsh or abrasive cleaning products or any abrasive sponges.

The copper tiles will patina/oxidize if left exposed to the elements.

Do not use a copper polish or cleaner to clean the copper tiles as it might take the finish off. If the finish does get taken off for some reason we recommend you use shoe polish on the tiles.
